In the courtyard of the Hotel Europe lies Tašlihan (Stone Inn), a former caravanserai built in the 15th century next to the Gazi Husrev-bey’s Bezistan. During the hotel’s renovation, its foundations and walls were uncovered. The remains of Tašlihan were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2007.
The Story of Hotel Europe
The Golden Book of Hotel Europe bears the signature of Josip Broz Tito (October 5, 1954), marking his first visit to the hotel. Tito often came accompanied by prominent leaders such as Edvard Kardelj, Moša Pijade, and Jawaharlal Nehru. He was especially fond of traditional dishes prepared by the hotel’s chefs, including bean stew, fritters, tufahije, and pancakes. Hotel Europe has always hosted many notable figures, among them Ivo Andrić, Yugoslav writer and diplomat, who regularly stayed in room 701, finding inspiration and peace in its view over Baščaršija and Trebević.
Timeless Elegance: The Architecture of Hotel Europe
Hotel Europe is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant hotels in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built during the Austro-Hungarian period as part of Sarajevo’s modernization, it was commissioned by merchant Ješua Salom and designed by architect Karlo Pařík, creator of the City Hall and National Theatre. Constructed in Neo-Renaissance style with elements of historicism and secession, its ornate façade, marble floors, and crystal chandeliers reflected the elegance of Vienna and Prague, marking Sarajevo as a modern European city. Fully renovated and expanded in the 21st century, the hotel today blends classic charm with contemporary design, preserving its historic soul.
